FAQ:
What is an extensively hydrolyzed formula? What makes Pepticate hypoallergenic?
An eHF is a formula where the proteins in cow milk have been hydrolyzed. Extensively hydrolyzed proteins means that the protein in the formula has been broken down to only consists of very small peptides and free amino acids, which are the building blocks of protein. The proteins are carefully produced this way so that the formula will be tolerated by infants with allergy to cow milk. In the United States, all formulas that are labeled as being “hypoallergenic” must also demonstrate tolerability by infants with allergy to cow’s milk in a clinical study based on criteria established by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP). Pepticate infant formula has been clinically demonstrated to be hypoallergenic by this standard. Extensively hydrolyzed protein-based formulas are different than formulas described as partially hydrolyzed. The proteins in partially hydrolyzed formulas are not broken down to the extent of the proteins in extensively hydrolyzed formulas and may not be appropriate for infants with a food allergy who require a hypoallergenic formula.
Why does Pepticate contain lactose?
Lactose is a source of carbohydrates in Pepticate. Lactose is major source of carbohydrate naturally found in breast milk, helping make the formula taste better.
How long can I keep prepared Pepticate?
Freshly prepared formula is best. Pepticate prepared in advance should be cooled rapidly, stored in the refrigerator at 35-40℉ (2-4℃) and used within 24 hours of preparation. Pepticate remaining in the bottle after one hour of feeding should be discarded.
Can I warm Pepticate that has been refrigerated?
If you choose to warm Pepticate, do not use microwave due to the risk of hot spots and burns. Instead, gently warm cold formula using a bottle warmer, a warm water bath, or by holding the bottle under warm, running water. We suggest using a thermometer to ensure the temperature does not exceed 104℉ (40℃).
What is the shelf life of Pepticate? How long can I use Pepticate after the can is opened?
Sealed cans of Pepticate should be stored in a cool, dry place and used by the use by date, which is located on the bottom of each can. Once can is opened, it should be used in one month. Note that you may have a Pepticate can in which the use by date is in European format (DD/MM/YYYY). Alternatively, the use by date will be formatted similar to the following: DD/MMM/YYYY.
How do I transition my child to Pepticate?
For most infants, changing from one formula to another is simple and doesn’t require a “transition period.” However, for some infants a change in taste – such as a move from another formula to Pepticate – can present a challenge. Also, some infants starting Pepticate may be new to formula –for instance transitioning from breast milk to Pepticate. Contact your child’s pediatrician or healthcare team to discuss this transition.
