JOBST FarrowWrap 4000 Compression Legpiece – FAQs
1. Can I use lotions and creams with my compression legpiece?
If your compression garment is latex-free, it is safe to use lotions or creams. This is especially beneficial for individuals with lymphedema or venous insufficiency, as daily moisturization is crucial for skin health. Applying lotion at night can also make it easier to put on your compression legpiece. However, if your garment contains latex (as some Jobst SupportWear products do), avoid using lotions or creams, as heat, ultraviolet light, copper-based products, hydrocarbons, and petrolatum-based creams can damage latex yarns.
2. How many hours daily should I wear my compression legpiece?
The recommended wearing time for compression garments depends on your specific condition and the compression level. A healthcare provider can guide you on the best schedule.
- Bed-bound patients may need anti-embolism stockings (16-18 mmHg) to prevent blood clots in the deep veins.
- After sclerotherapy, your doctor may recommend continuous wear for a set number of hours or days based on the size of the treated veins.
- For those with lymphedema, follow your doctor’s or therapist’s wearing schedule.
- Individuals with chronic venous issues like leg swelling or varicose veins typically wear compression garments while out of bed (about 16 hours a day) and remove them at night.
3. Should I wear a compression legpiece on the unaffected leg?
Compression should be worn only on the affected leg or the one showing symptoms. While some people choose to wear a compression garment on the unaffected leg in a lower compression level, typically only the leg with symptoms requires higher compression. For example, if your doctor recommends a 30-40 mmHg compression garment for one leg, you may choose a 15-20 mmHg for the other leg.
4. Can I wear one compression garment over another instead of using a higher compression level?
Yes, compression garments have an additive effect. Some doctors recommend wearing a pantyhose-style garment with one level of compression and then layering a knee-high compression legpiece over it for additional support.
5. I have latex allergies. Can I still use compression garments?
Latex is a natural material derived from the rubber tree and can be present in garments in two forms: dry natural rubber and natural rubber latex. However, most Jobst garments, including the FarrowWrap 4000, are latex-free, using synthetic spandex for elasticity, making them safe for individuals with latex allergies.
