FAQ
About Iodosorb Antimicrobial Wound Care Gel
Iodosorb ointment is a sterile formulation of cadexomer iodine. When applied to the wound, Iodosorb cleans it by absorbing fluids, removing exudate, pus and debris and forming a gel over the wound surface. As the ointment swells, iodine is released, killing bacteria in the wound.
Key Benefits & Features
- Indicated for use in chronic and infected wounds where bioburden is a barrier to healing
- Absorbs Exudate: Possesses high absorption capacity to help moisture balance. Absorbs up to 7x its own weight of wound exudate
- Disrupts Biofilm: Iodosorb has been shown to physically disrupt mature biofilm by absorbing it into the dressing and reducing the bacterial load within the biofilm
- Reduces Bioburden: Provides broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity (in vitro) for up to 72 hours even when re-challenged daily. More effective in reducing bioburden and infection compared to standard care
- Removes slough, debris and bacteria: Provides rapid and effective desloughing. Debrides wound bed via absorption of excess slough and debris to prepare for effective healing
- Gel changes from brown color to yellow/gray when it’s time for the dressing to be changed
Iodosorb Antimicrobial Wound Care Gel FAQs
How should I use this product?
- Clean the wound and the surrounding area with either a gentle stream of sterile water or saline. Do not dry the wound surface.
- Invert cap to puncture seal in tube. Spread Iodosorb in 1/8 – 1/4 in. thickness to dry sterile gauze, sufficient to cover all parts of the wound. Larger amounts are unnecessary though not problematic.
- With gloved hands, position the prepared gauze onto the wound.
How much of this product should I apply?
A single application should not exceed 1.8oz (50 g) gel and the total amount used in one week should not exceed 5.3oz (150 g). When managing venous stasis ulcers, compression bandages should be used in addition to Iodosorb.
How should change this product?
Each time the dressing is changed, the remaining Iodosorb should be gently washed from the wound or ulcer surface with a suitable cleansing solution (sterile water or saline) or with a sterile, wet swab.
- Iodosorb should be changed three times a week or when all the Iodosorb has changed in color from brown to yellow/grey.
- Remove Iodosorb with a gentle stream of sterile water or saline, using a sterile wet swab if necessary.
- Gently blot any excess fluid, leaving the wound surface slightly moist, before re-applying Iodosorb.
