What is the difference between gauze sponges and gauze pads?
Sponges are often referred to as a gauze pad-– a piece of gauze folded into a square; common sizes for sponges are 2” x 2” and 4” × 4”. Simply put, gauze pads come with one per pack, while gauze sponges come with two or more per pack.
What is the difference between woven and non woven gauze?
- Woven gauze is usually made from cotton fibers woven into a loose weave. This allows fluids from the wound to be absorbed into the fibers, wicked away, or passed through into other absorbent materials.
- Non-woven gauze is usually made from synthetic fibers (such as rayon, polyester, or a blend), which is pressed together to resemble a weave. This results in increased absorbency and better wicking.
- For extra strength or greater protection, woven gauze works best, while open or loose weave is better for absorbency or drainage.
